With the holiday fast approaching, retailers and consumers alike should be aware of the potential risks of gift card fraud, how to recognize it, and what to do about it if it happens.

Recognize the signs of fraud and learn how you can combat the fraud from the graphics to the right.

The Illinois Organized Retail Crime Association (ILORCA) recently hosted a gift card fraud virtual event with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to educate retailers about the increased activity around gift card fraud by organized criminal groups.

HSI provides warning signs that a gift card has been tampered with, as well as resources for businesses about recognizing and responding to gift card fraud. December is the busiest shopping month of the year, making businesses especially vulnerable to crimes like gift card fraud. ILORCA’s virtual event provided important insights into the ways criminal networks are exploiting retailers to fund broader organized crime.
