Jewel Osco- Bimbo Bakeries Volunteer Day at the Northern Illinois Food Bank

Annual Holiday Meal Box Packing -Ron Davis Memorial Volunteer Day

 

Congratulations to the folks from Jewel-Osco and Bimbo Bakeries USA for the exceptional work they did at the Northern Illinois Food Bank on Saturday, November 6th .  Nearly 100 volunteers divided into several groups,  while social distancing and meeting all the CDC guidelines.

 

  • The Group Meal Box Lines filled 1,428  Holiday Meal Boxes (14 pallets) 20,849 pounds of food, providing 17,374 meals
  • The Group  Can Labeling Lines labeled previously unmarked cans of vegetables totaling 6,950 pounds providing 5,792 meals

 

The group gathered before and after the volunteer day, and one could easily sense the camaraderie and the common bond food industry members shared- helping even in a small way  to make a difference in the lives of so many people.  Once on the line, with no resting or dogging it, everyone was on a mission to fill as many Holiday Meal Boxes or label as many cans, as possible. The quest was not to necessarily set any volunteer record- but rather focus on the families in need during the holidays and beyone.

 

The Food Bank staff was incredibly appreciative of each and every volunteer. The food industry has great compassion – food coming into the warehouse whether through direct donations, food rescue or generous financial support and going out to the families in need as quickly as humanly possible.

 

This was the 7th annual packing day commemorating the life of Ron Davis, a sales executive with Bimbo Bakeries USA  who passed away suddenly in 2014. Ron embodied the BBU Mission to Nourish, Delight and Serve America, Every Meal, Every Day.

 

We were also proud to serve alongside volunteers from Hormel Foods and M/I Homes.

 

Jewel-Osco presented a check to NIFB in the amount of $300,000.00 from Nourishing Neighbors, a charitable arm of the Albertsons Foundation. Hormel Foods presented a check in the amount of $20,000 to NIFB , monies raised from a promotion at Jewel-Osco stores from July-September of Natural Choice products. Bimbo Bakeries USA presented a check in the amount of $7,000 from its Every Little Bites promotion also at Jewel-Osco.
